Turning Follow-Up Into Revenue: How Group 1 Delivered Sales at £26 per Conversion

Case Study. Turning Follow-Up Into Revenue: How Group 1 Delivered Sales at £26 per Conversion

There’s a common assumption in automotive retail that once a lead goes quiet, the opportunity has passed. In reality, that’s rarely true.

What matters is when and how you re-engage, and whether that follow-up is treated as an afterthought, or as a strategic sales channel in its own right.

Following a winter sales event, Group 1 Automotive partnered with Direct Affinity CX to do exactly that: reconnect with prospective customers who hadn’t yet converted, and turn dormant enquiries into meaningful opportunities.

While triggered by a seasonal campaign, the approach reflects a much broader opportunity, one that applies at any point in the sales cycle.

A Simple Objective, Done Properly

The brief wasn’t complicated.

Re-engage previous enquiries. Create new opportunities. Deliver measurable return.

But as is often the case, the difference came down to execution.

Working as an extension of the Group 1 team, Direct Affinity CX designed and delivered a structured outbound follow-up campaign, combining high-quality data handling, trained customer contact specialists and a clear focus on capturing both outcomes and insight.

Rather than treating follow-up as a volume exercise alone, the campaign prioritised quality conversations at scale, with every interaction geared towards understanding intent, not just ticking off activity.

Scale Meets Substance

Over the course of the campaign:

  • 18,938 records were attempted
  • 1,236 callbacks were generated

Across those conversations, a clear pattern emerged: around 30–35% of customers spoken to were still actively in the market.

That’s a critical insight. Even within older or colder enquiry data, a significant proportion of customers remain viable when approached in the right way.

A 34% final outcome rate was achieved overall – in line with expectations for enquiry-based campaigns – but more importantly, the quality of engagement translated into meaningful opportunity.

Within that, the results told a stronger story: around one in five voice-to-voice conversations converted into a genuine opportunity.

That’s not just activity. That’s traction.

The Metric That Matters

Ultimately, performance comes down to commercial impact.

  • 4.25% conversion rate
  • £26 cost per sale

While conversion was slightly lower than a previous campaign (6%), the consistency in cost per sale tells a far more compelling story. In fact, this wasn’t a one-off. A similar campaign, delivered earlier in the year, achieved the same £26 cost per sale, reinforcing the approach as both repeatable and reliable.

Put simply, the campaign delivered profitable results at scale, not by chance, but through targeted outreach, well-handled conversations and a clear understanding of what drives customer action.

What Customers Actually Said

Beyond the numbers, the real value came from understanding why customers weren’t converting … yet.

By capturing structured feedback across thousands of conversations, Direct Affinity CX provided Group 1 with clear, actionable insight:

  • Many customers were happy with their current vehicle or not ready to change yet
  • Others were still actively researching, signalling future intent
  • Some leads had simply lost momentum, no longer recalling their original enquiry
  • External factors like company car schemes or Motability shaped decision timelines
  • Pricing, finance and part exchange expectations remained key considerations
  • A small number referenced previous dealership experiences

None of this points to lost opportunity. If anything, it highlights something more useful. A large proportion of customers were still viable, just not immediately ready. And that creates a clear path for smarter, better-timed re-engagement.

More Than a Follow-Up Campaign

What this activity demonstrated is that follow-up shouldn’t sit in the background. Done well, it becomes a predictable, insight-led revenue stream. This campaign didn’t just generate orders, it also:

  • Identified where data quality impacts performance
  • Highlighted the importance of timing in conversion
  • Created a foundation for more targeted future campaigns

What Happens Next

If there’s one clear takeaway, it’s that there is even more to unlock.

With access to richer or more refined data sources, combined with the same structured outreach approach, there is opportunity to:

  • Increase conversion rates
  • Improve contact and engagement levels
  • Drive even greater return on investment

The model works. Now it’s about sharpening it.

Client Perspective

“From our side, the campaign delivered exactly what we needed, not just in terms of orders, but in understanding the opportunity within our enquiry data.

Working with Direct Affinity CX, the structured follow-up and quality of conversations made a real difference. Even where customers weren’t ready to convert, we’ve come away with far greater visibility of future opportunity, and the cost per sale shows just how effective this approach can be when it’s done properly.”

A Final Thought

There’s no shortage of leads in automotive. What’s often missing is a structured, consistent way to bring them back into play. This campaign is a reminder that the sale isn’t always lost. Sometimes, it’s just waiting for the right follow-up.
