Case Study: Recovering Lost Sales for BMW & MINI – Group 1

Group 1 BMW & MINI Case Study

Overview

Group 1 BMW & MINI recently partnered with Direct Affinity CX to tackle a familiar challenge: large volumes of sales enquiries marked as ‘lost’, with no consistent or scalable way to re-engage them.

The Challenge

Despite strong enquiry volumes, a significant proportion of BMW & MINI prospects were marked as lost once an initial sale didn’t materialise.

As with many dealership groups:

  • Sales teams were focused on live opportunities
  • Lost leads were rarely prioritised once the customer disengaged
  • There was limited visibility into why customers didn’t buy

This meant valuable opportunities – already paid for through marketing – were being left dormant in the CRM.

The Approach

Direct Affinity CX deployed Lost&Lapsed to systematically re-engage BMW & MINI lost sales data.

The approach focused on:

  • Intelligent prioritisation of non-buyers most likely to still be in-market
  • Human-led outbound contact, supported by SMS where appropriate
  • Low-pressure, professional conversations designed to reopen dialogue, not force a sale
  • Routing re-engaged prospects directly back to the dealership team

Crucially, every interaction also captured insight into:

  • Whether the original barrier was pricing, product, timing or process
  • The customer’s current buying intent
  • Opportunities for improved follow-up in future

The Results

When Lost&Lapsed contact was completed, around one in three customers previously marked as ‘lost’ were found to still be actively in the market to buy, highlighting the scale of opportunity sitting dormant in the CRM. The initial activity delivered clear, measurable results based on confirmed sales recalled by the retailer:

  • 14 vehicle sales directly attributed to Lost&Lapsed activity
  • Approximately £45,000 in revenue generated
  • Around £8,500 total campaign spend

This equates to:

  • £5+ returned for every £1 invested based only on sales the retailer could immediately recall
  • Incremental revenue generated using existing CRM data, with no additional lead generation costs

Importantly, these figures are deliberately conservative. As seen across other dealer groups, full sales cross-matching typically identifies additional conversions that were not initially attributed back to re-engagement activity.

The Insight

Beyond recovered sales, Lost&Lapsed delivered valuable commercial insight. The activity consistently showed that:

  • Many lost customers were still open to buying
  • The original barrier was often timing or process, not outright rejection
  • Customers responded positively to professional, low-pressure recontact

This insight has helped dealership teams better understand where opportunities are lost and how future enquiry handling can be improved.

Dealer Perspective

“We’ve worked with Direct Affinity CX for over three years and they’ve become a trusted partner across our BMW and MINI network. The insight from their lost sale activity has been invaluable in helping us recover opportunities and improve conversion.

The feedback we receive is detailed, timely and highly actionable, combining robust data with meaningful insight into customer intent. It’s given us far greater visibility into why opportunities are lost and where genuine sales potential still exists.

Following consistently strong results, we’ve continued to expand the programme across our network.”

— Bill Latimer, Franchise Director, Group 1 Automotive (BMW & MINI)

Why It Worked

  • Focused re-engagement: Only relevant lost leads were contacted
  • Human-led conversations: Customers felt followed up, not chased
  • Clear attribution: Recalled and sold data validated real outcomes
  • Scalable model: Consistent results across brands and divisions
  • Proven confidence: The programme initially launched across five BMW & MINI sites and has since expanded to 28 locations following the success of the collaboration

Conclusion

Lost&Lapsed has helped BMW & MINI divisions of Group 1 convert missed opportunities into measurable incremental revenue.

What began as a pilot across five sites has since scaled to 28 BMW & MINI locations, reflecting both the commercial impact of the programme and the underlying insight that many ‘lost’ customers were still actively in-market.

Even using conservative assumptions and recalled sales only, the campaign delivered strong ROI, recovered sales that would otherwise have been lost, and provided valuable insight into customer decision-making.

With full sold-data matching, the results are likely to be even stronger.
